Santa Catalina

Santa Catalina, the largest Jesuit community in this region of Argentina, was founded in 1622. The estancia, located 20 kilometers (mi) northwest of Jesus María, is a beautiful example of colonial architecture in South America. The majority of the buildings date back to the 18th century.

When the Compañía de Jesús bought part of the land in Santa Catalina in 1754, there was a huge lack of water and reconstruction was needed. The area became a center of production that contributed to the development of the estancia.

Santa Catalina's church (Entrance fee: $1, winter: Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 3-7 p.m., summer: Tuesday-Sunday 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. Tel: 54-3525-421-600) remains one of its main attractions. The church's design was influenced by Baroque architecture from central Europe. Just next to the church, a small restaurant, La Ranchería, serves platters of local cheese and ham along with cooked meals. They also sell high-quality local craft products. There is no accommodation inside Santa Catalina, but you can find hotels in the surroundings, such as Posada Camina Real (Tel: 54-351-613-4287).

To get to Santa Catalina, take National Route 156 (west of Jesus Maria) that leads to Ascochinga. From there a road will lead you through a forest all the way to Santa Catalina.

Other places nearby Santa Catalina: Jesús Maria, Villa Tulumba and Cerro Colorado.
