San Luis is known as the Puerta del Cuyo (Door to the Cuyo) referring to the region 280 kilometers (173 mi) west that contains the city of Mendoza. The town is actually located at the southernmost part of the Sierra de San Luis. San Luis was founded in 1594 in honor of France’s King Louis. The highlight of the town is nearby Parque Nacional Sierra de las Quijadas. The cathedral and the Museo de Historia Natural are worth a visit, as is the Centro Artesanal San MartÃn de Porres.
