Alta Gracia

Altitude: 553 meters/1,814 feet, Population: 42,538, Telephone Code: 03547

Set among the rolling slopes of the Sierras Chicas, the tranquil town of Alta Gracia (population 42,600) is found 37km south of Córdoba. With an elevation of only 550m, its mild climate makes it one of the better places to relax and enjoy the region’s fresh air — something that was popular among Argentina’s wealthy class in the 1920s and 1930s. As the years rolled on, a pair of influential people would call the shady parks and winding, cobbled streets of Alta Gracia home. For the final seven years of his life until his death in 1946, Spanish composer Manuel de Falla lived here with the hope that the climate would temper his tuberculosis. And although he was more popular in Cuba and other regions of Latin America, Argentine son and revolutionary Ernesto “Che” Guevara lived here for a time during his youth in a vain attempt to ease the severe case of asthma that plagued him throughout his life.

Now the town houses a pair of museums to honor the pair. Casa de Ernesto “Che” Guevara has relevant items from his life, while Museo Manuel de Falla remembers the composer. Also worth visiting in town is the Estancia Jesuitica Alta Gracia and Museo Casa de Virrey. Or, for something a little more relaxing go to the Alta Gracia Golf Club (Av. Carlos Pellegrini 1000, Tel: 03547 422922). Accommodation is plentiful in Alta Gracia no matter your budget, and while the town is not known for its food there are a few restaurants that are worth a visit.
