La Cumbrecita

Altitude: 1,450 meters/4,757 feet, Populaiton: 186, Telephone Code: 03546

The quaint, peaceful Alpine-style village of La Cumbrecita is about 1,450 meters above sea level and is found approximately 35 kilometers northwest of Villa Belgrano. Nestled in a shady hamlet of spruce and pine trees, La Cumbrecita attracts crowds of Argentinians and extranjeros during the summer months, so it is best to come to town during the spring or autumn, when the natural beauty can be enjoyed without the crowds. There are a number of scenic hiking trails around the town; the best is the trek to La Cascada to see the stunning 14-meter (46-ft) waterfall. Hiking Cerro Champaquí or a quick trip to Villa Alpina are good options, as well.

La Cumbrecita was originally settled as a commune in 1933 by a family of central-European immigrants, who were responsible for constructing the distinctive Bavarian-style houses and planting the Alpine-esque evergreens. Soon after it was established as a tourist town, its picturesque tranquility and old-country charms attracting hordes of Argentinians looking for a peaceful vacation.

Today La Cumbrecita's economy still revolves around tourism. Since in 1996 it was established as a protected pedestrian-only environmental zone, it is one of the few towns in Argentina where you don't have to worry about being taken out by a taxi. There are a number of tea houses and restaurants specializing in European delicacies like black forest cake and goulash, and the large number of luxurious Alpine-style hotels and cabins will make you feel as if you were back in the motherland. It is also possible to camp in the surrounding forest if you prefer. Telephone Code: 03546, Population: 186.
