Villa Gesell

Altitude: 8 meters/26 feet, Population: 23,257, Telephone Code: 02255

This tourist town, on the central coast of Argentina, attracts young party goers and families alike. Villa Gesell's history is not long, but it has an interesting legacy nonetheless. It’s a place that was dreamed up, not to have flashy nightlife or a lazy beach culture, but to be an ecological oasis. In 1931, the German pioneer Carlos Gesell came to the area hoping to transform, what was then, land filled with barren sands dunes. He began by planting hundreds of trees which took hold and soon turned the once-useless land into a forest of conifers and acacias. His vision was to create a place where people could live as naturally as possible. In staying in tune with nature, he built the roads around the land’s features in order to keep his impact as light as possible. The town quickly became a mecca for naturalists; but, in the 1950s, developers with money began to move in and the nature-lovers paradise slowly changed into a center for tourism.
