Villa Ventana

Altitude: 350 meters/1,148 feet, Population: 2,000, Telephone code: 0291

Villa Ventana is located in the vicinity of Sierra de la Ventana (17 km southeast). Here, because of the altitude, the landscape contrasts with most of the Pampa region: vegetation is abundant and the landscape is hilly. Villa Ventana is a good starting point to discover Argentina's oldest mountain range, since it is a perfect site for hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and other outdoor activities.

Hiking trails and hotels get very busy during school holidays and the high season. During the low-season and weekdays, however, Villa Ventana is a quiet and peaceful town.

The Tourist Office, located just at the entrance to town from the highway, will be helpful giving you maps an recommendations on things to see and do. Villa Ventana offers few cultural attractions, but is rather an adventure tourism destination. Parque Provincial Ernesto Tornquist, five kilometers away, has a lot of hiking trails and climbing sites offering beautiful views of the Pampas. One of the main circuits is a two-hour hike that leads to Cerro de la Ventana (1,186 m / 3,891 ft), the highest point in the park.

In town, the Museo Historico de Villa Ventana displays objects, furniture and photographs showing different periods of the city's history.

Villa Ventana is known for its estancias, countryside homes that have been transformed into hotels. They allow visitors to get out of the city and enjoy a bit of calm rural life. Stay at Estancia las Vertientes (Ruta 76 km 221. Tel: 54-291-491-0064). Hosteria La Peninsula is the oldest hotel in Villa Ventana and is situated at the entrance of the town (Golondrina & Cruz del Sur. Tel: 54-291-491-0012).

For quick snacks, sandwiches or locally made alfajores, you can try Rancho Villa (Cruz del sur & Zorzal. Tel: 54-291-491-0052). It also has tables outside when the weather is warm. For good homemade pastas and meat or seafood dishes, go to Naposta (Cruz del Sur & Hornero. Tel: 54-291-491-0178).
