A flair for the dramatic easily describes Carlos Pulenta’s Vistalba winery. Features like the gourmet La Bourgogne restaurant, two all-inclusive (wine too) hotel suites, and a picture window-lined lounge highlight the natural beauty of the winery’s location near the Andes but the modern building steals the show. Opened in 2005, the building operates by gravity. Wine flows out of fermentation tanks, through filters, and into oak barrels that line the basement from floor to ceiling. The tasting room, accessed via stairs or elevator, is found deep in the basement with only three concrete-constructed walls; the forth reveals the arid Mendoza terroir from floor to ceiling with its unenclosed section of gravel. The wines, which include two labels, Vistalba and Tomero, offer two unique concepts. The former features blended wines, while the latter produce single varietals. Reservations are required.
