Made famous by the brand of bottled water found throughout Argentina, Villavicencio was declared a Natural Protected Area in 2001. Although the government recently approved a proposal to renovate the abandoned hotel and add a 108-room, 4-star building to the property, construction has yet to begin. Today, visitors are welcome to tour the well-maintained gardens and view the boarded-up hotel, but the thermal pools that made the area popular remain drained.
The highlight of Villavicencio lies in the steep switchback climb to Uspallata via the Cruz de Paramillos pass. The steep, winding road will leave the most road-hardy travelers gripping the edge of their seats. Several agencies, including Campo Base and Vendimia, offer the High Mountain tour via Villavicencio.
