City Plaza

By Brian Hagenbuch

The urban heart of Mendoza’s capital city, Plaza Independencia covers four blocks in the middle of the city. Founded in 1861 after a large earthquake, it has long been the public meeting spot where mendocinos get together. Weekends there is an arts and crafts market and there is often live music or theater. It is a refreshingly open forum where the city allows all kinds of activities and on any given day you might see a skate ramp set up or even a trapeze hanging from a tree branch.
