Every December 31, the 1593 peace accord struck between San Francisco Solano and the 9,000 Cacán warriors and 45 caciques is recreated in the Tikunaco, or Meeting. From the San Francisco church, the Inca Mayor and his court depart with the Niño Dios (Christ Child). At the same time, clergy and the “Apostles” leave from the Cathedral with San Nicolás de Bari, La Rioja’s patron saint. The two processions meet in front of the Casa de Gobierno where everyone (including San Nicolás) kneels before the Inca and Niño Dios. For four days, the Christ Child governs the city. On January 3, he instructs the mayor on good governance and retreats to Iglesia San Francisco until the following year.
