Parque Provincial Ischigualasto - Other Activity San Agustín Del Valle Fértil - Argentina

Parque Provincial Ischigualasto—or Valle de la Luna—is the only place on earth where the entire geologic sequence of the Triasic Period of the Mesozoic Era is preserved. These 45-50 million-year-old rocks are one of Argentina’s greatest fossil reservoirs. The most primitive dinosaur, Eoraptor lunensis, was found here. Eons of rain and wind have molded this lunar landscape into fantastic formations, such as El Submarino (The Submarine), El Gusano (The Worm), El Hongo (The Mushroom) and the enigmatic Cancha de Bochas, a sandy court filled with stone balls. The main circuit also visits Valle Pintado (Painted Valley) and Barrancas Coloradas (Red Cliffs).

Ischigualasto isn’t just about species frozen in time. Modern-day flora include cardoon cactus, algarroba, chaguar and other desert plants. Common fauna are guanaco, puma, grey fox, and various rodents, lizards and serpents. Flying over the heights are condor, buzzards, caracara and hawks.
