Safety in San Juan is good. Nonetheless, take common-sense measures against petty thievery and the like, especially when the tourist hordes arrive in summer. Tap water is safe.
Much of the hills in the San Juan region have loose scree. If hiking, watch your footing and wear good boots. Every year, several hikers die in falls.
