The near endless pampa, which covers nearly two-thirds of Mendoza, comes to an abrupt end in San Rafael. In its place, deep river valleys and volcanic formations are found. The RĆo Atuel is well-known for its spectacular canyon, exciting white-water rafting, and trout fishing, while both El Nihuil and Los Reyunos offer lake sports like sailing and waterskiing.
The town itself is quiet, but the parks and plazas are under endless renovations that keep them in prime condition. A few museums, local monuments, and a still under-appreciated wine scene will keep both the culture and thrill-seekers pleased.
