Excursions to the Cañon del Atuel can be arranged with most agents in San Rafael. They cover 170 kilometers and begin by passing through Cuadro Benegas and Los Terneros, agricultural areas with vineyards and olive trees, dotted with mud-brick homes.  It then passes by salt flats before reaching the reservoir El Nuihil and heading down the Cañon del Atuel. The tour ends at Valle Grande, where there is the option to negotiate with tour operators there to spend the afternoon rafting, climbing, or doing any number of adventure sports.
