Bicycling

By Brian Hagenbuch

Nearly everyone gets around by bike in the incredibly bike-friendly city of San Rafael. To join up with the locals, the best rental spot is Bicipartes. Bikes cost $4.75 for a half day and $6.35 for a full day. The friendly staff will take you back to a large back patio strewn with bikes and let you choose from a selection of beach cruisers and mountain bikes. Staff can also help you map your route out, but the most popular ride leaves from the shop and goes up Avenida Hipolito Yirigoyen where a wide, asphalt bike lane parallels the road and goes straight through the heart of San Rafael’s wine country, passing by six wineries in just a few miles. For those in town for a few days, you can keep the bikes overnight.
