Situated in a provincial nature reserve, Laguna del Diamante is a treasured location few people manage to visit. The lagoon sits at the western limit of the province at 3250 m (10662’), flanked by the 5323 m (17463’) Volcan Maipu.
The road to this nature reserve can only be tackled by 4X4 between December and March. Tours are available from both San Rafael and Mendoza, but travelers starting in the south will spend far less time on the highway and more time searching for guanacos during the bumpy ride into the lake.
