Plaza General San Martín

Location:
Carlos Pellegrini, y Coronel Day
San Rafael, Argentina

City Plaza

By Brian Hagenbuch

The central square in San Rafael is dominated by a huge bronze statue of San Martin, whose heroic crossing of the Andes started not far away. The plaza is well-lit, quiet and safe and full of couples, kids on bikes and people enjoying its shade. The present park boundaries were established in 1925, when a number of trees were planted. Now the square is a veritable arboretum of numerous, exotic species of good size, many of which are labeled with small placards at their base.
