The immortalized survival story, Alive, began when forty-five members of a Uruguayan rugby team crash-landed in the Andes on Friday, October 13, 1972, near El Sosneado, San Rafael. Death came quickly to many of the ill-fated flight; 16 died either on impact or within days to a combination of injuries and cold. Of the twenty-nine remaining passengers, 8 more were swept away in an avalanche. Fending off starvation using cannibalism, 16 survived until their December 23 rescue.

Today, a guided three-day horseback journey takes travelers to a monument that stands at the crash site near El Sosneado, a small town 142 km west of San Rafael.
