Crossing into Paraguay

Although less than 10 kilometers (6 mi) away, negotiating the borders of three countries can take the better part of a morning depending on your bus driver. Although it is possible to skip through the borders unchecked on a day trip to Ciudad del Este, the Paraguayan consulate in Puerto Iguazú warns it is not legal. Of course, anyone planning to spend time in Paraguay should take care to complete immigration formalities. This involves stopping for the Argentine exit stamp, then getting the entry and exit stamps for Brazil, and finally obtaining the entry stamp for Paraguay. The bus driver will not wait so take luggage with you, pack water and food for long waits, and keep hold of your ticket.

A simpler way is to take the direct ferry from Puerto Iguazú to Puerto Tres Fronteras (a.k.a. Puerto Bertoni), Paraguay. This is also a good option for travelers needing a visa for Brazil. See Getting to and Away from Puerto Iguazú for details. Day trippers can avoid a lot of hassle by booking a tour.

Citizens of the U.S., Canada and other countries need a visa for Paraguay. The consulate in Puerto Iguazú cannot issue one. The nearest diplomatic office that can is in Posadas.
