When to Go

Formosa, like the rest of eastern Formosa Province, has a humid subtropical climate. The highest temperatures, which can reach over 40ºC (104ºF), are in December and January. May-August is coldest and rain is scarce. Most precipitation falls from mid-summer to early fall, with an annual average of 1200 millimeters (47 in). Summer is not a great time to come to the region; due to the high temperaturas and humidity, most businesses close early and Formoseños leave on vacation. It is a popular Argentine destination during Easter and July holidays. Formosa’s celebrations include:

  • End of January—Corvina fishing tournament at Laguna Herredura, 40 kilometers (24 mi) southeast of the city
  • Semana Santa (Easter Week)—Via Crucis Formoseña, the world’s longest Via Crucis, beginning in Formosa and covering a distance of 570 kilometers (354 mi) along Ruta Nacional 81 to the border with Salta Province
  • April—Encuentro de Pueblos Originarios de América—a gathering of indigenous nations of America
  • July 16—Feast day of patron saint Nuestra Señora del Carmen
  • July 31—Festival de la Caña con Ruda –a night to drink sugar cane alcohol with rue (an herb) as a protection against mid-winter blues, accompanied by traditional foods and concerts
