Campo Del Cielo - Other Activity Roque Sáenz Peña - Argentina

Campo del Cielo, also called Parque Provincial Piguen N’Onaxa, owes its name to the meteorites strewn across the countryside near the border of Santiago del Estero Province. Scientists believe they are remnants of an asteroid that broke up in Earth’s atmosphere approximately 6,000 years ago. The largest chunk, nicknamed El Chaco, weighs 33.9 tons (37.4 t), making it the second-largest meteorite in the world. Boardwalk trails lead visitors to El Hacha 2.3 tons (2.5 t), El Taco 1.8 tons (2 t) and other meteorites.

Getting There

Campo del Cielo is 182 kilometers (109 mi) southwest of Sáenz Peña. It can be done as a day trip by travelers with their own vehicles. Take Ruta Nacional 16 to Avia Terai (35 km / 21 mi, paved), then south on Ruta Nacional 89 to Gancedo (131 km / 78.5 mi). From there a dirt road (good condition) heads 16 kilometers (9.5 mi) to the park. It is possible to do it with public transportation, but it would be a long and hurried trip. Another option is to take the train to Pinedo, then a bus to Gancedo from where a private vehicle can take you to the field. See Getting to and Away from Sáenz Peña for bus and train details.

Travel Tips:

Journeyers relying on public transportation may wish to spend the night in General Pinedo where two hotels provide lodging. There are no accommodations in Gancedo.
