Complejo Ecológico Municipal - Other Activity Roque Sáenz Peña - Argentina

Sáenz Peña’s 25-hectare (61.7-ac) Complejo Ecológico Municipal is a place to learn about the Chaco’s flora and fauna. Considered to be one of Argentina’s top three zoos, it is home to 214 native and exotic species (including a hippo and a pride of lions). It's also a successful endangered species breeding programs of jaguars, aguará guazú, giant anteaters and other animals endemic to the region. A number of birds and small mammals roam free. A one-kilometer (0.6 mi) trail winds through the complex’s botanical garden, a 20-hectare (49-ac) reserve protecting a forest of various Chaco flora.

Getting There

The zoo and botanical garden are at the junction of Ruta H Nacional 95 and Ruta Nacional 16; the entrance is 200 meters (650 ft) south of the rotunda, five kilometers (3 mi) from downtown. Take city bus Línea 2 from Belgrano (10) and Mitre (13) ($1.50). The bus also passes by the campground. A remis costs $5.70.

There is a picnic section with grills. Don’t feed any animals.

Visit the various historical and cultural museums. Make a day trip down to Parque Provincial Piguen N’Onaxa to search for meteorites. At the end of the day, relax at the Complejo Termal hot springs.
