Esteros Del Iberá

Esteros del Iberá are Argentina's largest wetlands, covering 1.3 million hectares (over 3.2 million acres) of northern Corrientes Province. For centuries, few visitors made it into this region. A few naturalists, like Félix de Azara (Spanish, 1746-1821) and Alcides D’Orbigny (French, 1802-1857), explored it, and some Guaraní-Spanish criollo gauchos moved deep into the estuary, living on floating islands. These mariscadores survived by hunting capybara and caiman for the international fashion market, driving those animals to near-extinction. In 1983, Reserva Natural Provincial del Iberá was established, and the former mariscadores became park rangers. The reserve includes 650,000 hectares (1.6 million acres) of totally-protected lands, plus several private nature reserves.
