Boat Tours - Boating Esteros Del Iberá - Argentina

The hottest ticket in town is the boat tour of Laguna Iberá. Most trips leave 6-11 a.m. or 4-6 p.m., avoiding the heat of day. Night excursions are also available. Outings are usually canceled if it’s raining.

Many morning rides do a three-hour trip to Miriñay, an area on the east side of the lagoon where there is palm forest and higher, thicker vegetation. This is the better excursion for birdwatching, though plenty of yacaré (caimans) and carpinchos (capybara) also are observed.

A two-hour journey wends the channels through the floating islands of Arroyo de Corrientes on the lagoon’s west side. Here the vegetation is lower. Caimans and capybara abound. It is also possible to see marsh deer and many species of avifauna.

Getting There

Tourists staying in lodges will have boat rides included in their package. Other travelers can ask at their hostel for a guide or shop around. One place to check at is Camping Iberá (800 meters (0.5 mi) south of Ruta Provincial 40 and Yacaré, Tel: 1562-9656 / 1540-8474, E-mail: municipalidad.pellegrini@gmail.com, URL: www.coloniapellegrini.com.gov.ar). Elisa González of El Paso is the only woman boat guide (Ruta Provincial 40, at the entrance of town, Tel: 43-9568, URL: www.elpasoibera.com.ar).

Travel Tips:

It is possible to negotiate a discount if there are several of you together.

Park regulations state boats must stay at least 2 meters (7 ft) from yacaré caimans and other wildlife. Unfortunately, many travelers report their guides “got right on top” of them. Before booking, ask the guide how close the boat will get and express your concern that the guidelines be followed.
