Down along the city's seafront the low tide reveals marshlands and tidal flats stretching many kilometers south. Resting and feeding here are resident species like the Ostero Austral (Magellanic Oystercatcher, Haematopus leucopodus) and Chorlito Ceniciento (Magellanic Plover, Pluvianellus socialis) and migratory birds, such as Playero Rojizo (Red Knot, Calidris canutus), Becasa de Mar (Hudsonian Godwit, Limosa haemastica), and Playerito Rabadilla Blanca (White-rumped Sandpiper, Calidris fuscicollis). This is Reserva Costera Urbana de Río Gallegos, the first Urban Coastal Reserve established in Argentina, in 2004, and part of the Hemispheric Shorebirds Network.
