Río Gallegos’ Museums - Museum Río Gallegos - Argentina

Each day of the week, you can choose a different museum to explore in Río Gallegos. They are open Monday-Friday 10 a.m.-5 p.m., unless otherwise noted. All are free, though some appreciate donations.

Museo de los Pioneros (Daily 10 a.m.-7:30 p.m. El Cano and Alberdi, Tel.: 43-7763, E-mail: pioneros@riogallegos.gov.ar) – An homage to the pioneers who forged a new life in this corner of the Patagonia.

Museo de Arte Eduardo Minnicelli (Tuesday-Friday 8 a.m.-7 p.m., weekends and holidays 3-7 p.m. Maipú 13, Tel.: 43-6323, E-mail: info@museominnicelli.com.ar, URL: www.museominnicelli.com.ar) – Galleries feature temporary exhibits and pieces from the permanent collection. Art openings occur the first Thursday of each month.

Museo Marítimo y Naval de la Patagonia Austral (Alcorta 478, Tel.: 42-2600) – Four exhibit halls about the Argentine navy.

Museo FerroviarioRoberto Galián (Mendoza and Pellegrini, Tel.: 42-6766) – The history of the coal railroad that once ran from Río Turbio to Río Gallegos, with a crowded train graveyard and a fully restored locomotive.

Museo Padre Molina (Monday-Friday 9 a.m.-7 p.m.; weekends and holidays 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Extended hours in summer. Cajal 51, Tel.: 42-6427) – This museum covers the natural and human history of the region.

Museo de la Prefectura Naval Argentina (Alcorta and Mascarello) – Displays discuss the Argentine navy's history and heroes, and shows replicas of ships.

Museo de la Policía (Monday-Friday 3-5 p.m. Loqui 90) – The history of the provincial police told through photos and instruments of the trade.

Museo Malvinas Argentinas (Closed for renovation. Pasteur 54, Tel.: 42-0128) – Argentina's only museum dedicated to the Malvinas (Falkland) Islands and the 1982 war.
