The Magellan Penguin colony at Punta Tumbo is a wonderful place to see penguins in their natural habitat. This is the largest Magellan Penguin colony outside of Antarctica, and half a million of these birds come to Punta Tumbo each year to breed and raise their chicks. The reserve is truly special in that you are able to literally walk among the penguins (no touching though!) and closely observe how these birds live and interact. The first penguins arrive in September, and stay until mid-March. The best time to observe the birds, though, is after November, after the chicks have hatched.
