Punta Walichu was a refuge for the ancient peoples who used to wander this valley. In these caves on the point jutting into Lago Argentino, ancestors of the Aónikenk nation left paintings about their lives and the fauna on these Patagonian plains. The site also has an interpretive center with a small display of fossils, archaeological artifacts and explanations of the geology. There are also photos of the last Aónikenk (Tehuelche) survivors.

Getting There

Morresi Viajes offers motorized tours to just the Cuevas ($19) or in combination with a city tour ($27); price includes transportation, guide and entry (Avenida del Libertador 1341, oficina 14-15, Tel.: 49-2075, E-mail: morresi@cotecal.com.ar). All other tour agencies book through Morresi. Head into Parque Nacional Los Glaciares to boat to and trek Glaciar Perito Moreno and the other glaciers, fish at Lago Roca. Go out to the estancias to enjoy an asado del palo and go horseback riding. Explore more of the ancient history of the region, at Bosque Petrificado la Leona. In town, visit the museums or birdwatch at Reserva Laguna Nímez.
