For travelers arriving by car or bike, the main office is located near the entrance to town (daily 8 a.m.-8 p.m., extended hours in summer. Coronel Rosales, across from La Tablita).

APN, the national park office, has information about Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, as well as a research library. It sells fishing permits for all Patagonia. Be sure to say howdy to the bronze, life-size statue of Perito Moreno working at his desk (October-April: daily 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., May-September daily 8 a.m. - 7 p.m. Avenida del Libertador 1302, Tel.: 49-1005, E-mail: apnglaciares@cotecal.com.ar).

The Secretería de Turismo de Santa Cruz has information about Los Antiguos, Puerto Deseado and other destinations in the province (Monday-Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. 1 de Mayo 50, Tel.: 49-2353, E-mail: elcalafate@santacruzpatagonia.gob.ar, URL: www.santacruzpatagonia.gob.ar).

Money

Banks are open Monday - Friday 8 a.m. - 1 p.m. Most have Link network ATMs that accept MasterCard, Cirrus, Visa, Plus and American Express cards, except where noted:
Banco Santa Cruz (Avenida del Libertador 1285) – also has ATM at Avenida del Libertador and Freile
Banco Tierra del Fuego (25 de Mayo 34) – ATM: only MasterCard, Visa
Banco de la Nación Argentina (Avenida del Libertador 1133) – also exchanges US dollars and Euros; Western Union agent
Banco Patagonia (Avenida del Libertador 1355) – ATM: also Diners Club
Casa de Cambios Thaler exchanges many Western and Latin American currencies, and the Yen, as well as American Express and other travelers checks in Western currencies (Monday - Friday 10 a.m. - 2 p.m. Avenida del Libertador 1242, Tel.: 49-3245).

Many businesses add a high surcharge to credit card purchases.


Communications

The local post office is Correo Argentino (Monday - Friday 9 a.m. - 4 p.m., Saturday 9 a.m. - 1 p.m. Avenida del Libertador 1133). Internet is expensive ($3.50 - 4.25 per hour, cheaper for Argentines) and slow in the high season. Many locales charge more for use of Skype. Most cafés are on the main drag: Arroba Ciber Café (25 de mayo 560, local 3), Centro Integral de Comunicaciones (Avenida del Libertador and Leman), Ciber Point (Avenida del Libertador 1440, local 4). If you prefer making an old-fashioned phone call, then use one of these phone booths: Del Glaciar I (25 de Mayo 43), Del Glaciar II (9 de Julio 57, local 8) or Open Calafate (Avenida del Libertador 996).


Medical

The regional public health facility is Hospital Distrital Josçe Formenti (Roca 1487, Tel.: 49-1173). Pharmacies are either near the hospital or on the principal avenue: Don Bosco (Roca 1350, Tel.: 49-2650), Minich (Roca 1391, Tel.: 49-6180; also Avenida del Libertador and Espora, Tel.: 49-2180), Del Cerro (Avenida del Libertador 1337, Tel.: 49-1496), El Calafate (Avenida del Libertador 1190, Tel.: 49-1407).


Laundry

To get your laundry done will cost you $4.50 - 5 per basket load. A few centrally located lavaderos are Lavadero (25 de Mayo 43, Tel.: 49-2182) and Lava y Lava (Gregores 1114, Tel.: 49-6566).

Camera

No one in town does camera repairs. Foto Aónikenk cleans cameras, as well as hand- and machine-processes film. Its stock includes 35mm color (ISO 100 - 400), black-and-white and slide film, 110 film, and digital photocards and accessories (Monday-Saturday 10 a.m.-10 p.m., Sunday 2-20 p.m. Avenida del Libertador 1319, Tel.: 49-1340).
