Whether the weather is keeping you from hitting the trails, or an injury has rained on your parade, El Chaltén’s community offers a few activities to fill the hours. The national park service, APN, has an interpretive center at its headquarters. One room covers the natural and human history of Parque Nacional Los Glaciares. A second room discusses in-depth the history of the park’s two challenging peaks, El Torre and Fitz Roy, and has an exhibit showing the ins and outs of mountain climbing. Documentaries in a variety of languages are shown daily at 2 p.m (TP-23, at the village entry).
The tourism office also has a small exhibit with mainly geologic and archaeological artifacts (Av. Guemes 21).
Biblioteca Popular Mujer Pionera has free art and photographic exhibits, Sunday movies, literary readings and other activities, as well as a library (Comandante Arrua, between Arbilla and Cerro Soto).
Tony Egger Gedankkapelle is a memorial chapel dedicated to Tony Egger and other climbers who have died on those rock spires (Costanera Norte and Río de las Vueltas).
