El Chaltén has no real crime problems. However, when hiking in Parque Nacional Los Glaciares, be aware of the weather conditions. Some hostels and businesses post the daily forecast. Also check with the park service regarding trail closures. Take warm clothing and rain gear with you. If conditions begin to change for the worse, head back. It is always a good idea to carry high-energy snacks and water with you.
