Getting To and Away from El Chaltén


By Bus
The majority of visitors reach El Chaltén by bus from El Calafate. The trip takes approximately 3.5 to 4 hours, and the bus usually stops for a 20 minute break halfway at Route 40. A roundtrip bus ticket between El Calafate and El Chaltén is 130 Argentine pesos (roughly $38), while a one way ticket is 70 AR (approximately $20.) Buses run daily between these two destinations from October to May; the rest of the year, service is not as frequent.
Buses from El Calafate to El Chaltén run everyday at 7:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 1 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. There is an additional 6 a.m. bus that runs on even days of the month.
Buses from El Chaltén to El Calafate run everyday at 7:30 a.m., 8:00 a.m., 1:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m., and 6:30 p.m. There is an additional 10 p.m. bus that runs on even days of the month.
In winter, snow can close roads, especially to Lago del Desierto and Piedra Buena. The only ways to arrive at El Chaltén during the cold months are by way of El Calafate and Río Gallegos.
A new bus terminal, due to open in time for the 2009-2010 high season, is being built at Avenida Güemes and P. Moreno, at the entrance to town.

Destinations:
To Hostería El Pilar / Río Eléctrico: Las Lengas (summer: 7 a.m., 8:30 a.m., 3 p.m.; winter: noon, $11.50 / $16. Also by remis $23-25.
To Lago del Desierto: Las Lengas (summer: 8:30 a.m., 3 p.m.; winter: noon with 2 hour wait, $23). Also by remise $57-69.
To Bahía Túnel (Lago Viedma): Remis $23-26
To Piedra Buena: Las Lengas (October-April or May: daily 5:30 a.m., $32), TPS (October-May: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday; less frequent in winter 5 a.m., $28, 4.5 hours)
To Río Gallegos: TPS (October-May: Monday-Saturday 5 a.m., less frequent in winter, $28, 5 hours)
To Bariloche and other northern points: October-mid-April many busses take Ruta 40; the rest of the year, via Ruta 3—Taqsa (11 p.m., $86, 32 hours; to Perito Moreno $40, Los Antiguos $43, Esquel $73, El Bolsón $83), Chaltén Travel (October-mid-April only, $55)
To El Calafate: Chaltén Travel (daily 8 a.m., 6 p.m., $20, 3.5 hours), Cal-Tur (daily 8 a.m., 6 p.m., $20, 3.5 hours). Also Taqsa.

By Air
Aeropuerto Internacional El Calafate is the nearest airport, and offers daily flights from Buenos Aires, with flights from other Argentine cities arriving less frequently. After arriving in Calfate, the quickest way to travel to El Chaltén is with one of the numerous bus companies.

By Car or Bike
 Highway RP-23, a paved road off RN-40, goes to El Chaltén. It continues north to Lago del Desierto. The access roads to El Chaltén: Ruta 40 – paved from Tres Lagos south to El Calafate, except for a six-kilometers stretch north & south of Río Leonas; can close in winter. Ruta 5 (from Río Gallegos) — paved; Ruta 288 (from Piedra Buena) — gravel; can close in winter.
