
Patagonia lodging is expensive, even for most Argentines. Hotels are typically twice the price as in other parts of the country. Solo budget travelers will find it difficult on Ruta Nacional 3, as there are no hostels between Trelew and RÃo Gallegos. In the high season, reservations are necessary and prices higher.
One cheap alternative is to camp. Most towns have sites. At any time of year, a good wind-proof tent with rain tarp is essential, as is an insulation pad. Cabañas are an option for couples or groups. Another strategy is to time a visit to Argentina's Patagonia fall-spring when prices are dramatically reduced. Some places, like El Calafate, have mid-winter hotel promotions to draw tourists.
