Getting to and away

By Elizabeth Findell

The town lies 113 kilometers northwest of Buenos Aires. To get there by bus is simple; Chevallier and Pullman General Belgrano make numerous runs throughout the day, leaving from the Buenos Aires Retiro station and returning from avenue Dr. Smith on the eastern edge of Areco. Chevallier has its own station, and Belgrano leaves from the Bar Don Segundo right next door. The trip takes about two hours and costs roughly $10 If you are traveling from elsewhere than Buenos Aires; companies that stop in San Antonio de Areco are Pullman General Belgrano, Chevallier, Master Bus, Antlántida and Empresa Argentina. If you are driving, it takes about an hour and a half to reach Areco from Buenos Aires. Take PanAmericana north, then take Pilar until kilometer 40, where the road continues as N°8. Two kilometers past the N°41 intersection, at kilometer 113, will be the entrance to the town. If you are staying on an estancía, they can often help arrange transportation from Buenos Aires.
