History of san antonio de areco
Founded in 1730 around a church built in honor of San Antonio de Padua, most of Areco was once a large piece of land owned by General Ruiz de Arellano, who sold part of it to the Catholic church to build the chapel. The village built up around the church and is best known as being the homeland of Don Segundo Sombra, character in the famous novel by Ricardo Güiraldes. It has been declared a national historical site by the president.
