By Elizabeth Findell

The best way to experience Areco is to throw on a comfortable pair of shoes or pick up a bike free of charge at the Visitor’s Center and cruise the town. Stores with gleaming gift items line the blocks around the central Plaza Arellano. On the south side of the plaza the church of San Antonio de Padua is worth a visit as the structure from which the town gets its name. There are several museums, including the Draghi and the Museo Gauchesco. To the north of town meanders the Areco river, the town swimming and picnicking area in the summer. If it’s hot and you want a dip there are designated swimming areas in the river, and the shady trees of the park alongside make for a pleasant afternoon base.
