Historical Building

By Shawn O'Bryant

When in Santa Fe is check out the abundant religious historical sights. The main attraction is the Convento de San Francisco, which is an impressive feat of colonial architecture and an interesting museum. The ceiling of the convent is especially amazing and a testament to the ingenuity of the pre-Hispanic people constructed the wooden masterpiece without nails and under gunpoint. Other highlights include the museum’s collection of colonial pistols and swords and a recreation of the first signing of the Argentine constitution.

The convent also displays a chunk of door that bears the impressive claw marks of the mystical and mysterious “Santa Fe Tiger.” The animal is rumored to have sprang out of the river and gona on a rampage in town, killing four people before being shot. To this day, no one knows where the creature came from, but the deep gouges in the planks bear witness to its tangible savageness.

Across the plaza from the Convent is another museum, the Museo Historico Provincial, which also has colonial relics and, in addition, a collection of historical traditional clothes and musical instruments.
