Cachi is a sleepy town in the mountain shadows 15 kilometers (9.3 mi) east of Nevado del Cachi, approximately 2,280 meters (7,480 ft) above sea level. The town is full of white buildings, antique adobe houses and paved streets centered around Plaza Mayor. The earth here is arid, but fertile enough to produce vegetables (especially peppers), and the weather varies depending on the season.
The main attractions in town are the plaza, the nearby white-painted Iglesia de San José and the Museo Arqueológico’s display of regional artifacts. Tour operators will happily show off surrounding mountainous regions such as Parque Nacional Los Cardones and Las Pailas. There is also a decent selection of lodging in Cachi for any budget, and several places in town to find a plate of humitas.
