Cafayate, located 183 kilometers (113.7 mi) from the provincial capital along National Route 68, is the main city in the district of Cafayate and is becoming an increasingly important site in the Calchaqui Valleys. At 1,660 meters (5,446 ft) above sea level, the town is well known for its wine; the region's unique temperature and humidity provide a perfect environment for the growth of the sweet grapes.

Originally founded by Franciscan missionaries, Cafayate is a small but modern town that embraces tourism. Hotel rooms in the village fill annually for the Serenata Cafayateña celebration held during the first weekend of Lent. However, it is the bodegas that most tourists to the area. Though Mendoza is better known for wine, the bodegas around Cafayate are where those in the know head for a glass of Torrontes. While in the area, you can check out some of the strange rock formations at Quebrada de las Conchas, Quebrada de los Flechas and Cerro San Isidoro.

As far as accommodation options are concerned, the best and most expensive is without a doubt the Hotel Los Patios de Cafayate. Hostal del Valle and Hostel Ruta 40 are more basic, but fine lodgings as well. El Rancho, Los Paraisos and Casa Ñanta are local favorites for a bite to eat.
