Pretty little Iruya is about three hours by bus from Humahuaca, a quaint village sheltered on all sides by massive mountains. Its whitewashed buildings and pretty landscape make it a relaxing stopover or day trip. Once a stop for stagecoaches running from the Puna to Peru, Iruya has become and increasingly popular tourist destination in recent years. But despite this influx of tourists, it retains its lovely, peaceful nature. From Iruya, a trip to the even tinier San Isidro is a full-day hike or horseback ride, but worth it, even if only to shop for beautiful locally crafted goods. Buses to Iruya leave on most days from Humahuaca.
