Humahuaca’s high altitude and surrounding mountains make for windy, chilly evenings, even in the summer. That said, winter days aren’t much colder than summer ones, but are a little bit drier since summer (December through March) marks the rainy season.
Carnaval, which runs through most of February, finds the town crammed with revelers, spray snow and talcum powder. It’s definitely a sight to see, but plan ahead for rooms, as they book up fast. The town is also crammed during its other major Festival, the Feast day of the Virgen de la Candelaria (February 2), which is marked by confetti and a parade of Virgin Mary statues through town.
