The sleepy village of Maimará, just five kilometers from Tilcara, is dominated by its surrounding mountains, rightly named La Paleta del Pintor (The Palette of the Painter) for its wash of creamy colors that look as though they could only have been created on purpose. The hillside cemetery—with its elaborate vaults and dried flowers that look perpetually fresh—fights the mountains for top billing. Also worth a visit are the beautiful ancient church and La Posta de Hornillos, a historical museum housed in a building that was once a colonial posting house where General Belgrano took refuge.
