Things to See and Do in Tilcara

Activity Info., City Plaza, Museum

By Suzanne Russo

Plaza Prado is in the heart of Tilcara. The daily market sells a variety of regional crafts. Non-shoppers can visit the museums that line the square. Art lovers have their pick of three museums: the Museo Ernesto Soto Avendaño, which is devoted to the sculptor who created Humahuaca’s Monument to Independence; the Museo Jose Antonio Terry, which contains regional art; and the Museo Irureta de Bellas Artes, which hosts more than 150 works by modern Argentine artists.

Those interested in the archaeological wonders of the region should not miss the Museo Arqueológico Dr. Eduardo Casanova, which houses artifacts discovered in the mountain fortress El Pucará. Admission to the museum is also good for the ruins, which are a 20 minute walk from Prado.
