Cerro de la Virgen

Activity Info., Culture, Festival, Hiking

By Suzanne Russo

The Sanctuary of the Virgin of Punta Corral (Cerro de la Virgen) is the destination of an annual Holy Week pilgrimage. On the Wednesday before Easter each year the Virgin of Copacabana, who leaves her sanctuary the Ash Wednesday prior, is ceremoniously returned to her home. Travelers can visit the sanctuary year round, though it is a long hike and best done with a guide. Ask at the tourism office for tours, which visit the desert chapels along the way, taking a full day and costing around $47
