Maimará

Location:
Tilcara, Argentina

Other Activity

By Suzanne Russo

The sleepy village of Maimará, five kilometers from Tilcara, is dominated by the surrounding mountains. The mountains, rightly named La Paleta del Pintor (The Palette of the Painter) for their wash of creamy colors, look as though they could only have been created on purpose.

The hillside cemetery —with its elaborate vaults and dried flowers that look perpetually fresh— fights the mountains for top-sight billing.

Also worth visiting are the beautiful ancient church and La Posta de Hornillos, a historical museum housed in a building that was once a colonial posting house where General Belgrano took refuge.
