Before rushing out to explore the stunning scenery surrounding Salta, take a couple of days to experience the beauty of the city itself. A trip up to the Cerro San Bernardo by cable car is a good way to get your bearings, revealing a historical center below, complete with churches, museums and grand colonial style buildings. For an evening flavor of Salta, head to the North of the city, where Peñas concentrate on C Balcare, a window into the folklore tradition, so prevalent in the area. Once ready to venture out of the city, adventure options abound, from horse-riding and rafting, to 4WD explorations through rough red terrain and grand salt flats. Distances are vast however, so be prepared for long though utterly worthwhile days of exploration. The only problem is deciding where to start.
