The meeting place of choice for lunching businessmen and groups sipping mate, Salta's leafy central Plaza is a great place to get a feel for Salteño culture. Take a seat under a tall palm and watch shoe-shiners hard at work, keeping an ear-out for an impromptu jamming session which often erupts from the bandstand. Grand colonial buildings, many with cafes at their bases, line the sides of the Plaza, making it easy to hang around a little longer.
