El Duende is a superb new hostel with comfy beds, fans and a kitchen / lounge with breakfast included. They also provide a great selection of DVDs. For 50 pesos a night, you get a private room and bathroom with hot water. The staff is very laid back and generally amiable people. They offer a laundry service and can help out with some tourist info.

Eight blocks from the main plaza, El Duende is a little ways from the main action but frankly you'll be glad for it, as most travelers arrive in Salta after a 12 hour plus mammoth bus journey and usually prefer somewhere quiet to recuperate. The hostel is convieniently located three blocks from the artisan market held every Sunday from 11 a.m. until late (ask directions at the hostel). This same street hosts a great selection of restaurants.
