By Elizabeth Sutcliffe

Salta is a pretty relaxed town and there is the reassuring presence of tourist police who patrol the central area. Begging can be a common annoyance if sitting out at a cafe on the Plaza; keep bags close and visible. South of Avenida San Martin, the town gets more deserted; there is also nothing of tourist interest here, so avoid the area if possible.
