Belén

Belén, located 85 kilometers (52.8 mi) west of Andalgalá along RP-46, is a good base for hiking, horseback riding and other adventure tourism activities. The city is well known for its alpaca and wool products, so it's a great place to hit the shops and search out some deals. At times, the road to Belén is impassable, so be sure to inquire before taking off in a rental car. Buses will not run if the conditions are prohibitively bad.

The Plaza Presbítero Olmos de Aguilera is a low-key place to spend an afternoon or a bit of time with an ice cream during summer. While in the area, pop in for a look at the Iglesia Nuestra Señora de Belén and the Museo Provincial Cóndor Huasi.

The best eating options in town are without a doubt 1900 and El Único. The first has large plates of regional meals, while the latter has fat steaks and a good wine selection. For lodging, backpackers gravitate toward Hotel Gómez and Hotel Samay. Hotel Belén is a fancier shackdown for travelers that can afford it.
